"Hmmmm, Interesting" —
Self-Portrait
This is a self-portrait about the art of
holding your tongue. It was painted live, brushstroke by brushstroke, as part
of my step-by-step video series teaching how to paint an oil painting from
scratch. What started as a demonstration became something far more personal.
If you know me, you know the pose — hand
tucked under the chin, a small, knowing smile. And the phrase: "Hmmmm,
interesting. "It's my polite code. My placeholder for all the things I’m
thinking that would be far too blunt, too honest, or too rude to say out loud.
It’s the filter between inner world and outer world, and that’s exactly what
this painting is. On one side, cool teal — calm, composed, logical. On the
other, a surge of hot red — tangled, emotional, unfiltered.
Thoughts turn into
symbols: a watchful fish, a translucent rose, bubbles of unspoken words rising
and dissolving. The mind is not a neat place, and this painting doesn't pretend
it is. This piece is for anyone who has ever smiled politely while their mind
was a whole surreal universe behind it. It’s introspective, a little cheeky,
and unapologetically feminine — a portrait not just of how I look, but of how
it feels to be inside my head for a moment too long.
