Unravelling Threads

Self-portrait — an ongoing search for truth, meaning and what lies beneath the surface. Unravelling Threads is a deeply personal self-portrait and a visual reflection of something I have spent much of my life doing: trying to understand how life actually works.

The threads winding through the painting represent the questions that have followed me for decades—the invisible connections between things, the structures beneath what we are told is reality, and the endless process of separating truth from assumption, belief from evidence, and wisdom from mythology.

The honeycomb-like geometric forms suggest the structures and systems through which we experience the world: intricate, interconnected and seemingly ordered. Yet they are also fragmented, imperfect and incomplete. The face emerging from this network represents the individual attempting to see through those structures rather than simply accepting them.

The contrasting textures and colours reflect the many layers through which we encounter information and meaning—spirituality, mythology, tradition, belief, authority, cultural conditioning and personal experience. Some things appear beautifully interconnected; others become obscured, distorted or difficult to distinguish. The painting deliberately offers no simple answer. At the centre of the work is the thread itself. It winds through the painting, disappears, re-emerges and continues beyond what we can see. It becomes a metaphor for the search itself: following one question inevitably leads to another.

Perhaps we unravel one mystery only to discover that it is connected to something much larger. And that raises the question behind the painting: Have I finally reached the end of the thread? Perhaps not. Perhaps there is no final answer—only the willingness to keep questioning. One idea that has stayed with me comes from Jordan Maxwell: “Always trust those looking for truth. Never trust those who have found it.” For me, this captures the spirit of Unravelling Threads. It isn't a painting about claiming to possess the truth. It is about remaining curious enough to keep looking for it.

The work invites the viewer to consider their own threads: Which beliefs have we inherited? Which ideas have we accepted because an authority told us they were true? What happens when we begin pulling at those threads ourselves? And where might they lead?

Unravelling Threads is ultimately a portrait not only of the artist, but of the eternal human impulse to question, investigate, wonder—and keep searching for what lies beneath the surface.
